IM == Annoying

Instant messaging is annoying. My son in Germany uses only the Yahoo IM. My sister in Arizona uses Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN messenger), and my friend in Phoenix uses Google Talk. Basically, if I want to IM any of them (provided they're online), I have to have three different instant messengers open.

You might think that I could get an all-in-one solution. Probably, but the all-in-one solution won't let me use voice and a webcam over all their services and getting them to all switch to just one IM of any brand is virtually impossible.

Use gaim. It's free, and supports all protocols.

Gaim-vv is the better choice. Its, of course, called Pidgin now, as AIM keeps bugging them. If ou have firewall issues, I can vouch for Miranda Messenger. Its the only one that can be installed on a USB stick, AFAIKT, that can put Yahoo! through port 80, which finally allows me to chat with my wife at home through our firewall.
